Virologist Warns of the Inevitability of Disease X
The World Health Organization (WHO) has long feared the emergence of a potential global pandemic known as Disease X. Virologist Ilaria Capua has now confirmed that the arrival of Disease X is not a matter of if, but when. Speaking in Milan, Capua stated that history has shown that pandemics, particularly influenza, occur every 11-40 years. Therefore, it is inevitable that another pandemic will occur, whether it is caused by influenza or other viruses.
Capua’s warning comes in the wake of the WHO’s concerns about the potential for a global health crisis. The virologist emphasized the importance of preparation, both on a global and individual level. Capua, who has returned to Italy after years in the US, emphasized the necessity of not forgetting the lessons learned from past pandemics. She urged individuals to continue practicing essential measures such as handwashing and mask-wearing.
When asked about the time horizon for preparing for disease X, Capua stressed the necessity of being ready at all times. “We should be ready tomorrow,” she stated. Capua emphasized the importance of not becoming complacent and continuing to apply preventive behaviors, as even simple gestures such as handwashing have already seen a decline in practice.
Capua’s warning serves as a reminder that the threat of pandemics is ever-present and that global preparedness is essential in mitigating the impact of future health crises. As the world continues to grapple with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the virologist’s words serve as a timely reminder of the importance of remaining vigilant and prepared for future threats.
