With dengue, America is heading towards the worst epidemic in history

The American continent is facing a looming threat as the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) warns of the possibility of the ā€œworst dengue fever epidemic in historyā€ in 2024. With over 3.5 million infections and at least a thousand deaths by the end of March, the continent is bracing for an unprecedented outbreak.

Cases of dengue fever have been reported in 18 countries on the continent, with Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay being the most affected. Brazil alone has seen 2,323,150 cases and at least 830 deaths. The situation is dire in Paraguay as well, with infections reaching 23 times higher than the same period last year.

As the epidemic pushes north, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are closely monitoring the virus and conducting disinfestation campaigns. The Aedes Aegypti mosquito, which spreads dengue, is establishing itself in new regions, including parts of the United States. While cases have been reported in Florida, health authorities expect more in states like Texas, Arizona, and southern California.

Despite the alarming numbers and the potential threat of the epidemic becoming a political weapon, experts believe that the US is better equipped to handle the outbreak compared to other countries on the continent. The prevalence of air conditioning and mosquito nets are expected to limit the number of infections in the country.

Although most people infected with dengue show no symptoms or experience mild flu-like symptoms, some cases can lead to severe complications such as septic shock. PAHO is working closely with country ministries of health to control mosquito populations and prevent further deaths as the epidemic continues to spread.
