2024 “Lighting Up China’s Lanterns” – Year of the Dragon Lantern Festival begins in Nanjing

The national main event of the Year of the Dragon Lantern Festival to welcome the New Year with lights was launched on February 2 in Nanjing, Jiangsu. The event is hosted by the Intangible Cultural Heritage Department of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, and the Nanjing Municipal People’s Government.

In accordance with traditional customs, the Intangible Cultural Heritage Department of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism launched the nationwide “Lighting up Chinese Lanterns”-Year of the Dragon Lantern Festival to welcome the New Year event. More than 500 intangible inheritance and practical activities of lantern festivals and lantern projects will be carried out across the country to fully create a warm, harmonious, lively and festive festival atmosphere.

The main venue activities in Nanjing include the launching ceremony, the National Lantern Festival lantern project exhibition, and performances of various intangible cultural heritage projects. The exhibition brings together more than 150 representative projects of 35 Lantern Festival Lantern Festival intangible cultural heritage projects from 15 provinces and cities across the country.

The 38th China Qinhuai Lantern Festival is also officially underway, featuring bright and colorful lanterns on site, and a performance of a real-life version of “The Lantern Picture of Shangyuan”.

The exhibition will last until February 24, allowing local people and tourists to savor the Chinese New Year in the intangible cultural heritage during the lantern festival.
