Honduran player Alberth Elis of Girondins de Bordeaux had to be hospitalized this Saturday after receiving a blow to the head during a match on matchday 26 of French Ligue 2.
40 seconds into the match against Guingamp, the striker collided with an opponent when he jumped to head the ball. The impact received was of such magnitude that the game was interrupted for 8 minutes to attend to the collapsed attacker at the Matmut Atlantique stadium.
Elis was later transferred to the Pellegrin Hospital in Bordeaux accompanied by his parents. According to L’Équipe, he suffered from a serious head injury, so he had to undergo emergency surgery, thereby inducing him into a coma to avoid discomfort due to pain.
The match ended with a 1-0 victory for Bordeaux. The players dedicated the victory to the Honduran national team player and wished him a speedy recovery.
«I think he hits the ball first, I hit him. For a second, I was also stunned. He lost consciousness. I hope he improves,” explained Donatien Gomis, the Guingamp defender who collided with Elis, quoted by the French newspaper.
