A murder without guilty: the investigations, the traces of the DNA and all the mysteries on the Quaiattini case, four years later

UDINE.Son the intercom of the house in via Emilia there is still his name. Rosetta Quaiattiniinstead, it is gone. Four years have passed since the day the 71-year-old retired health worker was killed with a stab in the throat. A ferocious rage, inexplicable then and unexplained to this day: after fourteen hundred and sixty days the murderer has no face, nor have the investigators been able to tighten the circle to identify an at least plausible motive. Four years of silence and questions, which remain unanswered: by setting fire to the room where Rosetta was found, the murderer perhaps knowingly polluted the crime scene, significantly complicating the investigators’ work.

THE MURDER

The autopsy performed by the pathologist Carlo Moreschi he had allowed us to fix some points: Rosetta had been killed on the evening of Thursday 25 January, probably between 19 and 21; the killer had girdled her around her shoulders, hitting her in the neck with a blade; on the body, tormented by the flames that had burned for a whole night, were found other wounds compatible with a cutting weapon, never found. It was a neighbor who noticed the smoke coming from the upper floor of the house, only at 8 in the morning: Rosetta was lying under a wardrobe, collapsed in the stake.

A LONELY LIFE

Smoking didn’t just compromise the crime scene. It enveloped the very existence of the 71-year-old from Beivars: taciturn, solitary, she was convinced that she had been targeted by unknown persons. “For about a year I have been suffering from unknown soiling of the perimeter wall that turns towards the road with black marks”, he had reported in May 2016. He had told of crosses drawn with salt in the garden, of poison spread to kill plants, of comings and goings of suspicious means. He had installed a camera at the entrance, which however did not store the images: that evening, nothing remained imprinted on the device’s memory. Yes, the cameras: this corner of Udine, squeezed between the state road and the Torre park, is not (was) guarded by electronic eyes that could have revealed a movement to be related to the heinous murder.

THE INVESTIGATIONS

The investigators’ activity has never stopped. Not even now, not even four years later, even though the many beaten tracks have not marked the expected turning point. To support the carabinieri of the investigative unit of Udine had arrived, from Parma, the colleagues of the Ris.

The graph published four years ago, after Rosetta’s death: still many unresolved doubts

The meticulous analysis of the finds found in the house in Via Emilia had made it possible to isolate a fragment of DNA and a palm print. The cross-checks, carried out involving relatives and acquaintances of the victim, “did not allow us to provide enough evidence to investigate a person”, explains the general Luciano Garofano, from 1995 to 2009 under the command of the Ris and technical consultant which the Prosecutor made use of in the investigative activity.

Without going into the details of the investigation, the officer frames the crime defining it «not an impetuous murder, carried out by a subject who knew how to move. What certainly emerges is that the person responsible was not found there by chance: the location of the house, the manner of the attack and the attempt to erase the traces lead to think of someone to be counted among the professionals of crime “. However, these are “large-mesh deductions”, the consultant specifies.

THE MURDER’S HOUSE

Looking at it today, the two-storey house where Rosetta had lived for decades looks like a house like so many in this corner of Friuli. On the door remain the marks of the adhesive tape that for months signaled the seizure of the house. In the garden are piled up the remains of what the stake had saved: pieces of chair, a clothesline. On the intercom the name of Rosetta, one of the three digits of the house number detached and placed on the small wall. Everything flows around as always, even the waters in the canal where the Ris searched for the murder weapon for days.
