Severe Flooding Hits Northern Part of Pearl River Basin, Ministry of Water Resources Takes Action

In a recent report by the People’s Daily Online, it has been revealed that the northern part of the Pearl River Basin has been experiencing heavy rainfall since April 18, leading to the occurrence of the No. 2 flood of 2024 in Beijiang. The Ministry of Water Resources has been closely monitoring the situation and taking swift action to ensure the safety of residents in the affected areas.

On April 22, the measured peak flow of the Shijiao Hydrological Station on the main stream of the Dongjiang River in Guangdong was recorded at 18,100 cubic meters per second, leading to severe floods in Beijiang. In response, the Ministry of Water Resources organized the Pearl River Water Conservancy Commission and the Guangdong Provincial Water Conservancy Department to make scientific and precise adjustments to the reservoirs in the Beijiang Basin.

Through joint dispatching of upstream reservoirs such as Lechangxia, Nanshui, and Jintan, a total of 210 million cubic meters of floodwater was stored, reducing the inflow of Feilaixia Reservoir by 1,300 cubic meters per second. Additionally, the timely use of flood diversions and the organization and transfer of people in dangerous areas ensured the safety of residents in the affected areas.

Thanks to systematic, scientific, and orderly dispatching efforts, the severe flood control situation in Beijiang has been greatly alleviated and avoided. The Ministry of Water Resources continues to closely monitor the situation and take necessary action to ensure the safety of residents in the region.
