Socio-environmental Institute data on the first 3 years of the Bolsonaro government

(ANSA) – BRAZIL, DEC 22 – According to a report by the Socio-environmental Institute, during the first three years of Jair Bolsonaro’s government, the deforestation of protected areas in the Brazilian Amazon grew significantly. In particular, between 2019 and 2021 the deforestation of the Conservation Units increased by 79% compared to the 2016-2018 three-year period, indicates the study based on data from the Amazon deforestation monitoring project by satellite.

The NGO also showed that in the Conservation Units located in indigenous lands, deforestation has so far increased by as much as 138% with the current government.

Forest destruction in indigenous reserves is greater than in other regions due to the offensive launched by gold miners, timber traffickers, and livestock and soy producers, environmentalists say.

For the coordinator of the report of the socio-environmental institute, Antonio Oviedo, the government has “dismantled” the protection policies of the Amazon through a series of measures such as lack of vigilance and the elimination of fines against those who commit crimes environmental. (HANDLE).
