CASTELLAMONTE. Despite having retired six months ago (he was a veterinarian for years at the ASL / To4 in Cuorgnè), Piero Domenico Giganti, 63 years old today, Wednesday 14 July, last Saturday won the title of individual Italian champion of trout fishing in the stream, in the Master category, in Chiesa Valmalenco, in the province of Sondrio.

A race that saw the best athletes in Italy compete in the waters of a torrent with waters that were forbidden to the inexperienced and to those who did not have a more than good preparation.

Joined the Aps Garisti company Rivarolo Tubertini of Rivarolo Canavese is a father of art: his son Andrea, in the same specialty became world champion and a few weeks ago, always with the Rivarolo Garisti Italian champion in the spinning specialty.

Piero Domenico Giganti says: «What I managed to do in the Lanterna stream is something extraordinary. I started racing as a boy. Then for reasons of work and little time available, I had to abandon this sport that was giving me great satisfaction and I liked it so much. I passed on this passion to my son Andrea, who in turn spurred me to resume the world of competition about ten years ago and I very gladly accepted this proposal, always aiming first of all to have fun. After the first competitions in which luckily I was still having fun, I decided to continue this adventure, until the apex obtained a few days ago when I graduated Italian individual champion of trout fishing in torrents. It was a great emotion – explains Giganti – because I didn’t expect to be able to do it. Compared to many other friends and competitors, I have participated with a competitive spirit, God forbid, but the victory, the placement, the podium has never conditioned me. Neither in the race nor in everyday life. I think it’s nice to meet up with enthusiasts on the banks of a stream and practice a sport that is also passion together.

What Piero Domenico Giganti did, at the age of 63, must be an example for many young people who give up at the first difficulties: to continue having fun and winning there are no age limits, but only a great desire for will. in knowing how to deal with every obstacle in the right way. And he did it well because the titles at home are no longer counted.

“We have a showcase full of cups, medals and plates and a couple of garages overflowing with fishing equipment – jokes his son Andrea, wearing the blue t-shirt with the tricolor – And then it’s nice to have the same shirt as dad”.

But the saga of the Giganti family does not stop with Andrea and his father: there are already the grandchildren who are promising. –
