Report: Free Summer Meals Program for Youth in Miami-Dade County
Miami-Dade County, Florida – The Community Action and Human Services Department (CAHSD) has announced that the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) will provide free meals to those under 18 years of age in Miami-Dade County next summer. The program has received the necessary funds to execute this important initiative, which aims to ensure that no child goes hungry, especially during the summer.
Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava expressed her commitment to the project, stating, “Our goal is to ensure that no child goes hungry, especially during the summer. Through the Summer Food Service Program, we are proud to provide free meals, ensuring the well-being of the youth of our community. Together, we strive to foster a healthy and prosperous environment for every child.”
The main objective of the program is to provide free meals during the months of June, July, and August, leading up to the elections. Supply points will be located at various locations in the county, and strict health and safety protocols will be observed.
The SFSP is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture and overseen by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. The program will offer nutritionally balanced meals, prepared with hot and cold foods in accordance with health standards, and using fresh, local products.
From June 10 to August 16 of the current year, all children under 18 years of age will have access to free meals, without any distinction of income, race, sex, disability, or national origin.
During each school year, children depend on the free or reduced-price meal programs offered by their schools. However, when summer arrives, they may face food insecurity. The goal of the SFSP is to fill that gap by offering free meals to children and youth in low-income communities.
