The last salary proposal of the Anglo-Australian group Bhp has been rejected
(ANSA) – SANTIAGO DEL CHILE, AUGUST 01 – The workers of the largest copper mine in the world, Escondida, in Chile, have decided to go on strike, believing that their wage claims have not been sufficiently taken into consideration by the Anglo group -Australian Bhp Billiton who manages the plant.
After a consultation among employees, the union representing them declared in a statement that the strike had 2,164 votes in favor, against 11 for accepting the owners’ latest offer.
It is feared that the strike will lead to price increases that are already sailing not far from the peak of $ 10,740 per ton reached on 13 May. With 1.2 million tons produced last year, Escondida is the largest copper mine in the world. (HANDLE).
