Today, May 11, a new day of Global Big Day arrives, an event led by bird lovers in different parts of the world who come together to simultaneously report birds on the same day, with the purpose of knowing their natural state, distribution, Migratory movements and effects of climate change on birds.

The activity consists of going in search of birds for 24 hours, which involves doing it both during the day and at night to record the greatest number of birds on the eBird platform, created by the Cornell University Ornithology Laboratory. United States, in which all observers record the birds of their regions with GPS points, photographs and songs.

Codechocó joins this day by carrying out the birding at five points located in the municipalities of El Carmen de Atrato, Nuquí, Acandí and the town of Tutunendo, specifically in the DRMI declared by Codechocó and the Las Tángaras Regional Natural Park.

This day will have the participation of the Community Councils present in the conservation areas, the PROAVES Foundation of Colombia and some organizations that are dedicated to bird watching.

“Bird tourism has been consolidated as an opportunity for the development of the communities and the economy of the territory. In the municipalities of Bahía Solano and El Carmen de Atrato, there are very well-organized activities that have allowed this type of activities to be strengthened every day and become national references for bird watching. On the other hand, we have the Las Tángaras Natural Park, considered one of the biodiversity hot spots with high bird endemism, which has the infrastructure,” said Arnold Rincón López.

This year we hope to contribute to the event with the report of a large number of species with the aim of continuing to occupy the first places in this global activity, which calls for the conservation of birds and their natural habitats.

The economic potential of Chocó is enormous in terms of bird watching, for ornithologists and tourists from all over the world.

Chocó has around a thousand species of birds and 49 HotSpots in eBird.

The Technological University of Chocó has an Ornithological Collection as a space for documenting the richness of birds in the department, which has the function of promoting scientific research on the conservation, ecology and distribution of the ornithofauna of the department of Chocó and Colombia. It was created with the purpose of generating useful bases for the development and execution of true plans for the management, use and conservation of the Chocó birdlife and as support for the research results of various projects carried out in agreement with other regional, national and even institutions. international, published in different reports, books and scientific journals.

The collection currently records 924 specimens, specimens of which have a level of identification up to species with 98% appropriately. These specimens are distributed in 12 orders, 30 families, 109 genera and 144 species, representing 15% of the ornithofauna reported for the department and 12.9% of the estimated richness for Colombia.

The most representative families in this collection are Thraupidae, with 309 specimens recorded and distributed in 14 genera and 22 species, followed by Tyranidae with 137 specimens distributed in 20 genera and 28 species, and Pipridae with 84 specimens in 4 genera and 6 species. Trochilidae and Thamnophilidae are also important families in the collection, with 83 and 75 specimens respectively, distributed in 11 and 9 genera each, although with 13 and 15 species respectively.
