Morena Presidential Candidate Claudia Sheinbaum Reacts to DEA Report on Mexican Cartels

Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, the presidential candidate of Morena, the Labor Party (PT), and the Green Ecologist Party of Mexico (PVEM) has responded to the recent report from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) regarding the structure, leadership, and operation of the Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).

During a visit to Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, Sheinbaum emphasized the importance of analyzing the basis of the National Drug Threat Assessment 2024 report, stating that the DEA has a history of publishing reports without any basis. She called for a closer examination of the sources behind the report before forming opinions on its content.

The DEA report highlights the role of the Sinaloa and Jalisco cartels in the production and distribution of drugs like fentanyl and methamphetamine, labeling them as global criminal enterprises with extensive networks. Sheinbaum, however, urged for a shift in perspective, viewing the fentanyl crisis in the US as a public health issue rather than solely focusing on drug trafficking.

Meanwhile, senators from the PRI and PAN parties have raised concerns about the implications of the DEA report. They allege that Morena has been complicit in allowing the Sinaloa Cartel and CJNG to operate freely, potentially benefiting from alliances with criminal groups for political gain.

In response, Senator José Narro from Morena has called for the DEA to provide concrete evidence to support their claims, cautioning against using the report for electoral purposes.

As the debate over the DEA report continues, the Mexican public awaits further clarification on the status of the country’s war on drugs and the government’s efforts to combat the influence of powerful criminal organizations.
