Leonardo Romano, the 43-year-old motorcyclist from Trieste who died in the motorcycle accident on Saturday afternoon along the Vallone leading to Gorizia, was expecting a child.
Comrade Mirjam Malalan, 36, is in her fourth month. «Yes – she says holding back her tears – he and I were expecting a baby. We wanted it so much. The meaning of my life now is to grow it ».
The forty-year-old, who had previously studied web design, was an employee of Insiel. He had worked in the company since 2004 as a computer technician. He mainly dealt with sites, in particular for the Region and the health service.
“A capable and appreciated professional, we lose a great person, a great man we really loved all of us”, confirm colleagues and even friends, whom Leonardo considered as brothers, now upset by a tragedy that cannot be explained. In these months of pandemic, the forty-year-old from Trieste had worked from home. “He was happy to do it because we could be together more,” explains his girlfriend.
Leonardo was also a sportsman, a surfer. He liked the sea, but he often went to the mountains as well. «He was full of life – still remembers his partner, Mirjam – really full of life».
There will be time and way to understand what really happened in that stretch of the Vallone. The centaur was riding a large-displacement motorcycle, he was overtaking. He lost control and ran into the guardrail. According to the findings, the impact did not occur on a straight, but in an area crossed by a series of curves. The forty-year-old crashed near the hamlet of Gabria in Savogna d’Isonzo, about one kilometer from the “Kemika” plant.
“Leonardo was not a person who liked to race with the bike, it was not something that interested him”, points out Mirjam. «He was always careful, he used it without overdoing it. On Saturday he told me he was just going to take a ride to relax. He left the house and took the bike telling me that we would meet in the evening as soon as I finished work. This from the bike was a passion he had recently, he rode it with attention and prudence, he was absolutely aware of the danger. Maybe on some straights he pulled a little harder, but he was limited to that. He was not stupid, also because he knew I was at home waiting for him ».
So what could have happened? «I have no idea – reflects the companion – as far as I know there are no witnesses. On the asphalt there were some braking, perhaps for some reason Leo got scared and lost control. Maybe something got in his way, I honestly don’t know. I loved him so much, we had been together for 12 years – Mirjam continues – we met through mutual friends. Now, while expecting the child, we made plans for our lives. We thought about when we would go together with the child to the mountains or to the sea. He was thrilled with these things. Because he was enthusiastic about life. Leo was a playful man. Now I have to live ahead for this: for our son. I want to bring another Leo into the world and raise him. ‘
