The National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE) of Colombia is preparing to carry out the 2024 National Urban Economic Census (CENU), an initiative that will allow updating and obtaining crucial information about the economic units in the country, with special emphasis on the Economy Popular. This action represents a significant milestone in providing a comprehensive view of economic activities in urban areas and will provide key data for long-term economic planning.

For the first time, the CENU will include a detailed exploration of the Popular Economy, ranging from street vendors to small businesses that play a vital role in the national economy, being an essential part of the daily lives of Colombians. Among the activities that will be the subject of study are the manufacturing industry, construction, commerce, services, transportation, and public administration and defense. This census is presented as a unique opportunity to gain a deep understanding of the fundamental characteristics of business in Colombia and to draw an economic roadmap for the next 10 years.

“One of the great objectives of the 2024 National Urban Economic Census is to generate statistical information on the visible economic units that are part of the popular economy, the challenge is enormous, by including in a census operation those productive units that contribute to the economic dynamics. of the country,” added the director of DANE, Piedad Urdinola.

Finally, the Director of DANE announced the upcoming CENU and invited the population to collaborate with DANE. “11 thousand census takers, duly uniformed and identified, will arrive at the municipal capitals and population centers of the country. We will cover 1,102 municipalities, including the island of San Andrés and 18 non-municipalized areas. It is important to clarify that this economic census will not include the rural or agricultural sector, since the scope of the next national agricultural census will be defined within the framework of the Statistics Law.
