China Achieves Food Security Milestone

The State Grain and Material Reserves Bureau of China has released data indicating that the country has achieved a significant milestone in food security. According to the data, China will purchase more than 400 million tons of grain in 2023, and the current grain stocks are sufficient to meet the demand.

The country’s grain market has remained stable throughout the past year, with workers in the agriculture, rural areas, and farmers sector continuously building a solid foundation for national food security. The intact storage capacity of national standard warehouses is expected to reach 700 million tons in 2023, providing a strong guarantee for high-quality economic development.

Director of the National Grain and Material Reserve Bureau, Liu Huanxin, stated that the goals and tasks of the national grain and material reserve system have been fully completed, and the national reserve strength and emergency support capabilities have been further enhanced.

Despite facing challenges such as rare “bad rain” in the Huanghuai River, severe local floods in North and Northeast China, and local drought in the Northwest, China has achieved a bumper harvest for the ninth consecutive year, maintaining grain output above 1.3 trillion jin. This achievement provides a solid foundation for ensuring grain supply and stable prices.

Experts believe that the implementation of the “Food Security Guarantee Law of the People’s Republic of China”, scheduled for June 1, 2024, will further strengthen food security in the country. The “Guarantee Law” will provide a legal framework for food security, consolidating the achievements made in this field and promoting the transformation of China’s food security from policy-based governance to legal governance.

In addition to legislation, China has also achieved full informatization coverage for central grain reserves and lowest purchase price grains, further enhancing the country’s ability to respond to risks and challenges in the field of food security.

As the country prepares for the Spring Festival, experts emphasize the importance of ensuring a smooth operation of grain supply while purchasing autumn grain. The focus will be on strengthening coordination of grain source dispatch, processing and sales, inventory release, reserve adjustment, and emergency supply, forming a joint force to ensure supply and stable price.

Looking ahead to 2024, Liu Huanxin emphasized the need to further strengthen the coordinated guarantee of grain production, storage, and sales, and enhance the national reserve strength to provide a strong guarantee for high-quality economic and social development.

The achievements in food security in China signify a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to ensure a stable and sufficient food supply for its citizens.
