Hoogstraten –

A detainee was able to escape from the Hoogstraten penal institution on Monday night. He has now been arrested again.

The man, like in the movies, tied some sheets together and climbed through a window. Then he swam across the moat surrounding the prison. “The police were immediately informed on Tuesday morning,” said Valérie Callebaut of the Prison Service.

“Police and staff immediately conducted a search. Hoogstraten prison has a semi-open regime and the detainees serving their sentences there have the profile to live in a communal regime.”

However, he was not able to enjoy his newfound freedom for long. The fugitive detainee was recaptured on Tuesday. The Prison Service reported this on Tuesday evening.

The man is serving a conviction for drug offences.
