Did you lose your ID? This way you can get a duplicate without complications

The citizenship card is much more than a simple document in Colombia, it is the key to identifying ourselves in any procedure and to exercise our political rights, such as voting in elections. But what to do if we unfortunately lose this important document?

Fortunately, since August 2023, the process to obtain a duplicate has been simplified, it is no longer necessary to report the theft or loss to the authorities. Here we explain step by step how to obtain your duplicate:

Find the nearest headquarters of the Registry online and request an appointment: It is important to schedule an appointment in advance to avoid long waits.
Make the corresponding payment: You can do it in person at Banco Popular, Efecty or 4-72, or online through the PSE option on the Registry’s website.
Present the necessary documentation at the headquarters: Upon arrival, explain that you have lost your ID and present a recent photograph, the original birth certificate and proof of payment.
Receive your provisional receipt: Once the procedures are completed, you will be given a receipt that you can temporarily use as an identification document while you wait for the duplicate to be delivered.

Now, how much does this process cost in 2024?

According to information from the Registry, the cost of a duplicate physical ID is $60,950 pesos for applications within Colombia, while for applications from abroad the cost is $61.09 US dollars.

If you prefer to obtain a digital ID, the price is $17,000 pesos for national applications and $17.05 US dollars for applications from outside the country.
