The Department of Social Prosperity (DPS) announced a bold strategy to confront poverty in Colombia: convert subsidies into productive programs. In a public event in Barranquilla, the director of the DPS, together with the support of the President of the Republic, revealed plans to eliminate traditional subsidies and replace them with initiatives that promote job creation and the creation of entrepreneurs.

The DPS director, on behalf of President Petro, highlighted the need to change the focus of subsidies towards programs that encourage active participation in the economy. “Subsidies have to end,” he declared emphatically, arguing that, according to the evidence, subsidies alone have failed to lift people out of poverty.

The new vision of the National Government aims to direct subsidies towards those who really need it and cannot participate in productive activities, reserving the resources to guarantee a fundamental right: decent work. The aim is to promote the economic autonomy and empowerment of beneficiaries, transforming them from passive recipients of assistance into entrepreneurs and generators of wealth.

The implementation of productive programs is expected to generate a long-term positive impact, not only on the quality of life of the direct beneficiaries, but also on the economic and social development of the country as a whole.
