The Representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Togo, Dr. Fatoumata Binta Tidiane Diallo, was elevated to the rank of Highness Queen Mother Mamagan, by the council of traditional chiefs of the Maritime region. The induction ceremony was held on January 26, 2024 at the Royal Palace of Togbui Dzidzoli Awounor Detu X, in Lomé.

Arriving in Togo in 2018, Dr. Diallo put community engagement with the involvement of traditional leaders at the heart of the partnership strategy with Togo. This strategy has paid off during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In Togo, as part of the response to COVID-19, traditional leaders were fully involved and played a leading role in the successes achieved by the country, particularly with regard to vaccination. Thus, as of January 31, 2024, Togo has a COVID-19 vaccination coverage rate of 18% of the general population and 27.25% of the target (12 years and over), placing it among the countries of sub-Saharan Africa. the best performers in terms of vaccination against COVID-19.

Aware of the impact of the actions carried out for the health of the Togolese populations and recognizing the role of the WHO in strengthening their collaboration with the country’s health system, the crowned heads of the commune of Grand Lomé and the Maritime region chose to honor the institution, through its resident representative, Dr. Fatoumata Binta Tidiane Diallo.

“We take this opportunity to reiterate our sincere gratitude for the valuable support provided by the WHO to our dear country Togo in the context of improving the health of the populations,” said Togbuigan Mawuto Frédéric Dzidzoli Detu of canton of Aflao Gakli, spokesperson for the cantonal chiefs of the commune of Grand Lomé and President of the Council of Traditional Chieftaincy of the Maritime region.

Togbuigan Detu

During the induction ceremony, the WHO Resident Representative expressed her deep gratitude for the honor and consideration. “It is with humility that I accept my new responsibilities. By elevating me to the rank of Highness Queen Mother Mamagan, you externalize the attention you pay to my modest person and to the Organization that I represent in this beautiful country, Togo,” declared Dr. Diallo.

She thanked the traditional chiefs for the honor they gave her by elevating her to the rank of Highness Queen Mother Mamagan of the commune of Grand Lomé and the Maritime region.

At the end of her mandate, Dr. Fatoumata Binta Tidiane Diallo leaves Togo in a few weeks. She took the opportunity to thank the Togolese Head of State and his government for having authorized her accreditation in Togo, the starting point of her meeting and her fruitful collaboration with the country’s traditional leaders.

It should be noted that the World Health Organization has been present with the Togolese state since February 18, 1961 with headquarters agreements and the installation of an office in 1963 and supports it in the implementation of policies, strategies and interventions for the well-being and health of the populations of Togo.
