The mother and stepfather who locked a child in a narrow and dark room in a house in Marcinelle (province of Hainaut) remain arrested. The Charleroi council chamber decided this on Tuesday evening.

In Marcinelle, a sub-municipality of Charleroi, a 9-year-old child was found last week in a narrow and dark room in a house on rue Basson. The child lived in the family home in horrible conditions. “The child was in a small room where the available space had been significantly reduced to 2 square meters of surface area. It was locked up in darkness for weeks, even months. The child was only allowed to leave the room to eat a few sandwiches,” the Charleroi public prosecutor’s office said on Saturday.

The mother and stepfather were arrested and arrested for deprivation of liberty, deprivation of food, assault and battery and inhuman and degrading treatment.

The two suspects remain in custody, the Charleroi public prosecutor’s office and their lawyers reported on Tuesday evening. The two may appeal the decision.
