The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility has informed Ecuadorian citizens that the embassy in Mexico City and the consulate in Monterrey will continue to operate normally until Wednesday, May 15, 2024. As of May 16, they will close indefinitely.
The Foreign Ministry has indicated that starting May 16, 2024, consular services and any other services required by the Ecuadorian community in Mexico will be provided in offices in Guatemala City, as well as in Phoenix and Houston, in the United States. .
The closure of these two diplomatic headquarters is a consequence of the breakdown of relations that took place on April 5, 2024, when the Ecuadorian police entered the Mexican embassy in Quito to arrest former vice president Jorge Glas. This incident occurred just when Mexico granted political asylum to Glas, who was wanted by Ecuadorian justice.
The Foreign Ministry has redirected Ecuadorians to the offices where they can access services or carry out the corresponding procedures.
