The Münster Student Union provides 22 emergency accommodation beds for students who cannot find accommodation at all. For around two years, the emergency shelter has almost never been completely empty. However, these places are not a permanent place to stay.
Why is there so much demand for student halls of residence?
The German Economic Institute (IW) has in one Additional housing costs report Almost two million apartment advertisements from December 2023 were evaluated. Compared to winter 2021/2022, the burden of additional costs has increased by an average of 43 percent. The student unions also suspect this development to be a reason for the high number of applicants for dormitory places.
The reason for the high number of applicants could be the increased rental prices on the private housing market, which means that many older students in particular would like to move to a student residence. Spokesperson for the Aachen Student Union (Source: German Press Agency)
The high numbers arise because both first-year students and students who have been enrolled for a long time apply.
The prices for dormitory places are also rising
On average, a room in a student dormitory in Germany costs 280 euros per month. Prices are often higher, especially in popular university towns. Due to inflation, the student union in Cologne has raised prices from an average of 303 euros to 339 euros.
