Walloon farmers are planning a new protest in Brussels on February 26, when the European agriculture ministers meet there. Farmers’ federation Fugea announced this in a press release on Wednesday. They are expected to be joined by European colleagues, although the participation of other French-speaking associations is not yet certain.

“Europe does not seem to understand what is at stake and is coming up with proposals designed to appease the strongest,” Fugea said. The interest group especially criticizes the European Commission’s proposals to “abolish measures to protect the environment and biodiversity”.

Fugea will continue to press until “real progress” is made. The organization calls on the EU, among other things, to withdraw from free trade agreements such as with the Mercosur countries and for a strong common agricultural policy.

In recent weeks, farmers in Belgium and the rest of Europe have taken to the streets against agricultural policy. More than a thousand tractors paralyzed the Belgian capital on February 1 and several supermarket distribution centers were blocked. Yesterday, farmers paralyzed the port of Antwerp by erecting several filter blockages.
