The fatal victim of a collision on the E40 in Veurne has been identified. The public prosecutor’s office reports this. It concerns a 22 or 23-year-old Sudanese, who had previously been stopped in France.

The man was hit on Thursday morning around 4.15 am on the E40 in the direction of Jabbeke. The occupants of a vehicle with a French license plate called the police, reporting that they had driven over a body between Veurne and Oostduinkerke. The emergency services determined that the man’s body parts were spread over several hundred meters.

The public prosecutor’s office therefore faced a difficult task to identify the victim. The skin color of the man and the intervention of the police earlier in the evening already suggested that he was a transmigrant. This has now been confirmed, the public prosecutor’s office reports: it concerns a Sudanese man who was born in 2001. Because he had already been stopped in France in December 2023, he was in the database.

The investigation into the precise circumstances of the accident is still ongoing. According to the public prosecutor’s office, the condition of the body points to multiple collisions, possibly also by trucks. Anyone with more information about the accident can contact the road police post in Kortrijk or email [email protected].
