This Sunday, May 12, 2024, the deadline for the fiscal investigation of the Manabí Reconstruction Case ended, where State Attorney General’s Office investigates for embezzlement Jorge Glas, former vice president and eight other Correismo officials.
In addition to Glas, In this investigation they are accused of embezzlement the former Minister of Transportation and Public Works, Walter Solis; the former secretary of the Reconstruction of Manabí, Carlos BernaL; y Boris Córdova, former Minister of Transportation.
Also Franklin Bernal and Omar Chamarro, former Undersecretaries of Public Works; and Victor Jaramilloformer director of the Works Contracting Service (SECOB); Milton Maldonado, former director of Real Estate; and Pedro Ortizformer manager of Ecuador Estratégico.
With the instruction stage already closed, now The opinion of Attorney General Diana Salazar is awaited, to ask the National Judge, Julio Inga, to set a date for the trial preparatory hearing.
The accused will now face a ruling in the trial preparatory hearing.
The diverted money, according to the Prosecutor’s Office, amounts to 367 million dollars. That money was part of what was collected with the Solidarity Law to face the effects left by the earthquake of April 2016.
According to the tax charges, public funds were diverted that should have been used exclusively to repair the damages left by the 2016 earthquakewhich had Manabí as its epicenter.
Accusations against former officials for Reconstruction of Manabí
According to the Prosecutor’s Office, irregularities were detected and surcharges on issues such as mobile hospitals and resettlements for victims.
The Prosecutor’s Office pointed out that the former officials took advantage of the money to finance non-priority projects such as parks, fixing aircraft and it was also detected that benefited a family member’s company direct from Carlos Bernal.
Glas and the other eight former Correísta officials will also face accusations from the Attorney General’s Office and the Citizen Participation Council.
These entities seek that the accused, if found guilty, pay a economic reparation to the State.
Fugitives and sentenced for Bribery, Odebrecht and Senagua cases
Walter Solis is fugitive in Mexicothe country that granted him refuge. Bernal is in MiamiUSA.
Solís has two sentences for Bribery Case, eight years old; and for him Senagua Casealso eight years.
Glas is currently imprisoned in La Roca prison. He has two sentences, one of six years for the Odebrecht corruption case, and another of eight years for the Bribery Case.
Glas was detained at the Mexican embassy in Ecuador, by decision of the Government of Daniel Noboato prevent their escape.
