Governor DeSantis Deploys Troops to Florida Keys to Prevent Potential Flow of Illegal Immigration from Haiti
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has taken action to reinforce security along the state’s south coast and keys in anticipation of a potential influx of illegal immigration from Haiti. The governor ordered the deployment of approximately 250 members of various state security agencies, including sea and air resources, to prevent illegal aliens from entering Florida.
“We cannot allow illegal aliens to come to Florida,” stated DeSantis in a press release. The state has been dedicating significant resources to combat illegal boats arriving from countries like Haiti, and this latest deployment aims to further strengthen security measures.
Among the troops being dispatched are 48 Florida National Guard agents and four helicopters, along with 133 members of the Florida State Guard. The decision comes as the United Nations called on the Dominican Republic and other countries to respect the human rights of Haitians seeking a better life elsewhere and to avoid forced deportations.
Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava also reached out to President Joe Biden for multi-agency coordination to address the political crisis in Haiti, emphasizing the implications for Florida due to its large Haitian community.
Meanwhile, the United States government is urging for the prompt appointment of a new Haitian prime minister following the resignation of Ariel Henry. He has been governing on an interim basis since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in July 2021, but recent developments have led to increased unrest in Haiti.
The situation in Haiti remains precarious, and Governor DeSantis’ decision to deploy additional troops reflects the state’s commitment to border security and safeguarding its communities.
