Guidance and statistics: “More than 40,000 cancer cases in Yemen and 7 governorates most affected

“Yamnat” obtained official statistics revealing an increase in the number of cancer cases recorded during the period extending from 2015 to 2022 (8 years).

The aforementioned statistics were issued by the National Center for Cancer Treatment in Sana’a.

The relationship of pesticides to cancer

“Yamnat” obtained a memorandum addressed from the Director of the Office of the Presidency of the Republic in Sana’a, Ahmed Hamed, to the Prime Minister of the caretaker government, Abdul Aziz bin Habtour, stating that the statistics show an increase in the number of people infected with cancerous tumors, and this is related to the use of agricultural pesticides, especially in the cultivation of qat.

The memorandum dated December 18, 2023 confirmed that the directives of the President of the Supreme Political Council stipulate that the relevant authorities follow up and establish a working mechanism for strict procedures on pesticides, and that only pesticides that are safe are allowed to enter.

Seven concerned parties

“Yamnat” also obtained a memorandum from the head of the caretaker government in Sana’a, Abdulaziz bin Habtour, addressed to the ministers of finance, interior, agriculture, irrigation, public health, population, water, environment, industry and trade, and the head of the Security and Intelligence Service, which requires the implementation of the directives contained in the memorandum from the Office of the Presidency of the Republic.

The memorandum dated January 23, 2024 confirms that coordination will take place between these parties, each within its jurisdiction, and that they will benefit from what is done in this regard, taking into account the applicable laws and decisions related to procedures for importing agricultural pesticides.

More than 40 thousand cases of cancer

Statistics issued by the National Center for Oncology reveal that the total cases of cancerous tumors registered with it during the eight years amounted to 43 thousand and 7 hundred and 35 cases (43,735) and are distributed across all governorates.

An increase of more than half

According to statistics, the number of cases of cancerous tumors in 2015 registered with the center during the year was (4,207) cases from various governorates of the country, while the number of cases increased during the year 2022 to (6,789) cases in various governorates, an increase of (2,582) cases compared to the registered cases. In 2015, at a rate of 61.3%, which means that the increase increased by more than half in 8 years.

Ibb Governorate

Ibb Governorate topped the highest cases of cancerous tumors recorded in the center, as the number of cases recorded during the eight years reached (6,807) cases, with a rate of approximately (15.6%) of the total cases recorded in all governorates during the same period.

The number of cases of infection recorded in Ibb Governorate in the year 2015 reached (718) cases, and it increased in the year 2022 to (1,022) cases, an increase of (304) cases, with an increase rate of (42.3%) compared to the cases recorded in the year 2015.

Taiz Governorate

And followed by Ibb Governorate: Taiz Governorate, where the cases registered with the center during the eight years amounted to (6,126) cases of cancerous tumors, at a rate of (14%) of the total cases registered in all governorates during the same period.

The total number of cases registered with the center in 2015 from Taiz Governorate reached (548) cases, increasing in 2022 to (950) cases, an increase of (402) cases, with an increase rate of about (73.4%) compared to the year 2015.

Dhamar Governorate

Dhamar Governorate came in third place, where the number of cases of cancerous tumors registered with the center during the eight years reached (4,731) cases, representing (10.8%) of the total cases of infection recorded in all governorates during the same period.

The cases of cancerous tumors registered with the center in the year 2015 from Dhamar Governorate reached (479) cases, and they increased in the year 2022 to (748) cases, an increase of (269) cases, with an increase rate of about (56.2%) compared to the year 2015.

Hodeidah Governorate

In fourth place came Hodeidah Governorate, where infection cases recorded by the center during the eight years amounted to (3,691) cases, representing (8.4%) of the total cases recorded in all governorates during the same period.

The cases of cancerous tumors registered with the center in the year 2015 from Hodeidah Governorate reached (216) cases, and they increased in the year 2022 to (608) cases, an increase of (392) cases, with an increase rate of about (181.5%) compared to the year 2015.

Sana’a Governorate

In fifth place came Sana’a Governorate, where the cases of cancerous tumors registered with the center during the eight years amounted to (3,233) cases, representing (7.4%) of the total cases registered in all governorates.

The cases of cancerous tumors registered with the center in the year 2015 from Sana’a Governorate reached (365) cases, and they increased in the year 2022 to (475) cases, an increase of (110) cases, with an increase rate of about (30.4%) compared to the year 2015.

Hajjah Governorate

In sixth place came Hajjah Governorate, where the cases of cancerous tumors registered with the center during the eight years amounted to (3,224) cases, with a percentage approaching (7.4%) of the total cases recorded in all governorates during the same period.

The cases of cancerous tumors registered with the center in the year 2015 from Hajjah Governorate amounted to (292) cases, and they increased in the year 2022 to (507) cases, an increase of (215) cases, with an increase rate of (73.6%) compared to the year 2015.

Capital Municipality

In seventh place came the Capital Municipality, where the total number of cases of cancerous tumors registered with the center during the eight years reached (2,739) cases, at a rate of about (6.3%) of the total cases registered in all governorates during the same period.

The cases of cancerous tumors registered with the center in the year 2015 from the capital secretariat reached (238) cases, and they increased in the year 2022 to (421) cases, an increase of (138) cases, with an increase rate of about (76.9%) compared to the year 2015.

The majority of infections are in 7 governorates

In the seven aforementioned governorates, the total number of cases of cancerous tumors registered with the Center during the eight years reached (30,551) cases, with a percentage of approximately (70%) of the total cases registered in the Republic of Yemen, which consists of (22) governorates, while the rest of the percentage was distributed among the rest of the governorates. .
