The ruling party seeks answers from the IACHR for alleged violations of democracy
In the midst of an acute political controversy in Colombia, the Historical Pact, the governing party, filed a complaint before the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) about what it considers an alleged “institutional rupture” in the country. This arises in response to warnings from the President of the Republic, Gustavo Petro, who has warned about an alleged political persecution orchestrated by the Attorney General’s Office.
According to Alejandro Toro, representative of the Chamber of the Historical Pact, several points of concern to the Government party were identified, including the suspension of government officials, investigations and raids, illegal pressure on witnesses with the aim of incriminating President Petro, criminalization of supports politicians, among others.
Furthermore, the ruling party considers “that there are violations of various human rights and democratic principles:
The right to justice and due process.
Freedom of association and expression.
The right to participate in the government and public life of your country.
Given these facts, we request that the IACHR:
Accept this complaint and examine it in accordance with your procedures.
Conduct an impartial investigation into the reported events.
“Urge the Colombian State to guarantee respect for democratic principles and human rights, including the right to a fair trial, freedom of expression and association, and political participation,” the representative wrote to the House on his X account, formerly Twitter.

“Even facts repeated several times in the campaigns of other political parties such as the one to which the attorney general belongs, and which have been previously declared legal, in our case are desperately criminalized,” he pointed.

“This institutional breakdown has reached maximum desperation, because the mafias do not want to lose control of entire sections of the prosecutor’s office that I have put in danger by having presented a shortlist of decent women,” stated Petro Urrego.
“The desperate response will be not only to suspend the chancellor of the Republic, but also to criminally prosecute the president of Ecopetrol and the superintendent of Public Services for having been president of the Colombia Humana party. “The Prosecutor’s Office will request my impeachment without hiding that it has carried out an unconstitutional investigation against me, seeking the victory that the people did not grant them,” the head of state insisted.

“They have decided to break the institution. As president of the Republic, I must notify the world of the mafia takeover of the Prosecutor’s Office and I must ask the people for maximum popular mobilization for decency,” assured the Colombian president.
Finally, the current president indicated: “You cannot overthrow a progressive president here, the first in a century, because legally a workers’ union contributed to a left-wing party. “The time has come for popular expression.”
