New Russian air strikes on the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv claimed five lives, including three rescue workers, on Wednesday night. The local authorities have communicated this. Images circulating on social media show the drone hitting firefighters who were on their way to the affected area.
Russian drones struck homes in Kharkiv on the night of Wednesday to Thursday. Four people were killed in a second attack on a densely populated district in Kharkiv that had just been bombed, Mayor Igor Terekhov reported on Telegram. Three victims were rescue workers who arrived on the scene after the first attack. Five people were also injured. Footage shows a girl having to duck from the large explosion of the drone attack on the fire truck.
A total of four bombings were reportedly carried out on Ukraine’s second largest city. Kharkiv is located close to the border with Russia in northeastern Ukraine and is often under fire by the Russian army.
The Ukrainian government has been begging its Western allies for some time for more anti-aircraft systems, especially the American Patriot system. Military aid from Washington has been stuck in parliament for months, where Donald Trump’s Republican Party is blocking a $60 billion aid package promised by President Joe Biden.
