The Prellbock Altona citizens’ initiative complains about Deutsche Bahn’s construction sites. The company is ruthlessly implementing its route closures. There is a threat of rail chaos in the greater Hamburg area for 20 years.

The citizens’ initiative has meticulously listed how many major construction sites Deutsche Bahn is planning in the next few years. It’s about the renewal of the Sternbrücke, as well as the Süderelb and Norderelbbrücke, and it also names the Diebsteich long-distance station. In addition, the railway wants to dig a railway tunnel between Dammtor and Altona, which will probably cost ten billion euros. This threatens track closures for years, warns the initiative’s spokesman, Michael Jung: “This is a habit of taking the train. Because the disruptions are so lasting that in some cases up to 15 percent of the entire train service will be canceled.”

Long closure between Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein

Prellbock Altona also believes that the full closures between Altona and Schleswig-Holstein that will start on Saturday are far too long. There will be no long-distance and regional trains running to and from Pinneberg for two weeks. Afterwards, there will be a two-week closure between Pinneberg and Elmshorn – so that only 2.8 kilometers of tracks can be replaced. “In a well-organized railway operation, a long weekend should actually be enough for that,” criticizes Jung. The accusation from his citizens’ initiative: This is inconsiderate towards the passengers.
