Instructions for use – Claudio Rossi Marcelli

I have recently become a mother and I would like some advice on some book or article to orient yourself in the knowledge of the newborn. – Gloria

In 2006, a book by Louis and Joe Borgenicht came out entitled The baby, instruction manual, which acts as a “practical guide for the user, troubleshooting and useful advice for the correct installation and maintenance” of the child. The items in the chapters include “sleep mode activation”, “diaper installation”, “discharge monitoring” and “refueling phase programming”. The book opens with the list of components, complete with an invitation to check their correct functioning and, if any are defective, contact an authorized service center. It’s fun to read, but unfortunately babies don’t come with an instruction booklet and you have to make do.

The first source of wisdom for new parents are the grandparents, the pediatrician, the friends who have children, from whom you absorb useful advice in a somewhat casual way, then immersing everything in your new maternal instinct. And the same happens with books for parents: there are hundreds of them and they are chosen a little by word of mouth, a little by chance. Many turn out to be useless, but then one happens to you that enlightens you on some important issue for you.

It is a personal journey for which there is no list of titles valid for everyone and where everyone creates their own library. To me, for example, a book that really left something is Just kids by Irene Bernardini, who taught me the beauty of knowing how to say no to their children.
