Laurie Anderson becomes a visiting professor at Essen’s Folkwang University

Essen The Folkwang University is getting another prominent teacher: after Marina Abramovic, Laurie Anderson is now taking over the Bausch professorship.

After performance star Marina Abramovic, the Essen Folkwang University of the Arts has won another prominent artist for the Pina Bausch Professorship, which is being offered for the second time. Laurie Anderson, internationally renowned writer, director, composer, visual artist, musician and singer, will work with selected Folkwang students from all artistic disciplines in the 2024 summer semester.

The American speaks of a great “honor to take on this professorship in the name of Pina Bausch. She has inspired me with her courageous, fascinating and revolutionary work and I hope that I can lead young artists and thinkers on paths that follow her example.”

Folkwang principal is enthusiastic

Folkwang Rector Andreas Jacobs is no less enthusiastic about the choice: “Anderson perfectly embodies what we want for the interdisciplinary approach of this professorship.” The 76-year-old has created groundbreaking works over the course of her eventful artistic history – equally in the field of visual arts, theater as well as experimental music and technology, according to an initial statement from the university. She would be celebrated not least for her approach to combining music, performance art and technology and thus pushing the boundaries of artistic expression.

Laurie Anderson has realized countless multimedia stage performances, published ten books and has already been nominated for five Grammy Awards. The most extensive solo exhibitions to date were recently dedicated to her at the Hirshhorn Museum, Washington DC, and the Moderna Museet, Stockholm. Anderson is currently working on an opera, ARK, for the 2024 Manchester International Festival.

Pina Bausch Professorship is supported by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia

The visiting professorship named after Pina Bausch was established for the first time by the Ministry of Culture and Science of North Rhine-Westphalia in the winter semester of 2022/23 – in collaboration with the Pina Bausch Foundation. Internationally outstanding artists from all disciplines are appointed to the Folkwang University of the Arts for one year each. Together with the students, they should develop new ways of working and implement thinking and research that transcends all boundaries.

A final public presentation with Laurie Anderson is planned for July 2024. Marina Abramovic attracted around 10,000 visitors with her “54 Hours Performances” at the Folkwang Museum in 2023.
