The 2027 Pan American Games that Barranquilla lost will be held in Lima, Peru, as confirmed this March 12, after holding an extraordinary meeting between the National Olympic Committees that are part of Panam Sports.
It is important to remember that the organization previously decided to withdraw the right to host the games in Barranquilla, due to non-compliance related to the payments necessary to hold the event.
It should be remembered that after learning of the news that Colombia was losing the Pan American Games, the Government had launched an action plan to recover the venue, however, the efforts were of no avail, as days later the loss was confirmed.
Given this, it was known that Asunción and Lima were the new postulates, and it was later defined that the Peruvian capital would be the official headquarters of the 2027 Games.
The meeting had the physical presence in Miami of the delegates of the candidate cities and the Executive Committee, while the other participants joined virtually. Before the meeting, Neven Ilic, president of Panam Sports, expressed his satisfaction with the development of the process and the great anticipation generated by the competition between two prominent cities on the continent for the privilege of hosting the 2027 Pan American Games.
During the session, each candidate city had 40 minutes to present its proposal to the Assembly, followed by a period to answer questions from member countries. It was established that those countries that have previously hosted these games would obtain two votes each, making a total of 52 votes.
At the conclusion of the voting, it was announced that Lima had been selected with 28 votes as the next host city of the 2027 Pan American Games.
The city now faces the challenge of continuing with the necessary preparations to ensure that, in 2027, thousands of athletes find top-quality sports facilities and accommodation.
