Linz city bikes break the 150,000 mark

The bicycle rental system in Linz is well received. This is shown by the figures that traffic officer Vice Mayor Martin Hajart (VP) presented yesterday. More than 150,000 trips have been completed since it launched in March 2021, and almost 20,000 people have installed the necessary app. The bikes can only be rented and returned at one of the 42 stations in the city center; the first half hour is free. You can see this in the rental statistics, because 93 percent of the trips last less than 30 minutes. The city bikes are most used between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., with Wednesday being the most popular day. The station near the main train station has by far the most rentals, followed by Lederergasse and Schubertstrasse.

Expansion to the east

Due to high demand, the network is currently being expanded to the east. Ten new stations are planned, three of which have already been implemented. Two locations are currently still being examined. This “eastern expansion” is a measure to avert the impending traffic collapse in the east of Linz that the expansion of the tobacco factory and other projects could bring with it. “We want to offer people optimal options for using gentle mobility,” says Hajart.

New to the rental system’s offering is a cargo bike that can be booked for heavy transport and is set up in Domgasse near the post office. If it proves successful, more cargo bikes could follow.
