The earthquake struck at 2 a.m. local time on Tuesday (7 p.m. Monday Belgian time) at a depth of 27 kilometers in China’s Xinjiang region, about 140 kilometers west of the city of Aksu.

Shortly afterwards, three aftershocks were recorded in the region, with magnitudes around 5, USGS said.

There have been no reports of casualties in the area, which is mountainous and very remote. “Significant damage is likely and the disaster may be widespread,” the US agency warned.

Local television stations in the Indian capital New Delhi, about 1,400 kilometers away, also reported tremors.

This earthquake comes a day after at least eight people were killed in an earthquake in southwestern China. Dozens of people were buried.

A major earthquake in the northwest of the country killed 148 people and left thousands homeless in the northwestern province of Gansu in December. That was the deadliest earthquake in China since 2014, when more than 600 people were killed in the southwestern province of Yunnan.
