The high-level meeting between authorities from Mexico and the United States last Friday resulted in several key agreements, as highlighted by Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena. The 10 specific agreements include an investigation into the alert issued by the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) for the securing of weapons in Mexico for the exclusive use of the US Army.

During a morning conference on Monday, January 22 in Querétaro, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador described the meeting with United States officials as “very good.” According to Bárcena, urgent investigation into the Sedena alert regarding the seizure of US Army weapons in Mexico was emphasized.

Among the 10 agreements reached, the key points are as follows:

1. Homologize migration figures from a joint panel with weekly updates.
2. Hold a trilateral meeting between Mexico, Guatemala, and the United States in Guatemalan territory as soon as possible.
3. Define parameters for entry into the CBP-One platform.
4. Collaborate to combat human trafficking networks.
5. Investigate the Sedena alert regarding the seizure of US Army weapons in Mexico.
6. Reinforce the Mexican consular network in Texas with more protection measures.
7. Exchange information on sanctioning Central American and Mexican companies involved in irregular migration.
8. Urge the conclusion of the work of Ota and II on the American side.
9. Joint visit to Darién along with Panamanian and Colombian authorities.
10. Issue careful and preferably agreed public statements.

Bárcena also highlighted Mexico’s achievements in reducing encounters on the northern border by more than half. The migration phenomenon was recognized as a regional issue requiring cooperation. The meeting also emphasized addressing the structural causes of migration and developing orderly, regular, and safe migration routes.
