Mexico: Work on the Tren Maya will be suspended on sections

Mexico City. A federal judge has ruled that work on the Mayan trend located in areas 3, 4, 5 north and 6. This means that all processes related to deforestation or deforestation in the areas would be stopped, says the Mexican Center for Environmental Law Cemda (Centro Mexicano de Derecho Ambiental). The center was one of the organizations that filed the injunction against the federal megaproject.

After 18 months, the first district judge of the state of Yucatán has assured the Mayan communities of Campeche, Yucatán and Quintana Roo, as well as the organizations that accompanied the communities in the court process, the permanent suspension of the work, according to a Cemda spokesman. The judge’s decision was based on the fact that “the continuation of logging and clearing operations for the construction of the Tren Maya mega-project, without obtaining change-of-use permits, could result in communities and organizations having an irreversible impact on their right to a… healthy environment.” The following sections will be affected by the cancellation: Section 3 (Calkiní – Izamal), Section 4 (Izamal – Cancún), Section 5 North (Cancún – Playa del Carmen) and Section 6 (Tulum – Chetumal). In order to clarify the cessation of works, the court took up the reasoning of the 14th District Collegiate Labor and Administrative Court, noting that “the preliminary permits issued on the basis of the agreement for the execution of the construction works of the railway line , do not replace the permits, which require a technical and scientific study before the works. The lack of such a permit in itself endangers the ecosystem in which the works are carried out, because it allows the works to start without the to know the effects of the possible damage, the environmental damage being irreparable in many cases”.

The Mayan communities and the Mexican Center for Environmental Law are asking the judiciary to uphold and implement the cessation of work. And the judiciary should “proceed with the greatest care in this case, since experience had been gained in previous appointments that the responsible authorities did not comply with the agreements made”.
