The Association of Agro-Environmental Miners of Chocó, Asomachoc, announced that it will carry out a mining strike in Chocó starting at 6 am on Monday, March 18.
They affirm that they feel deceived by the government of Gustavo Petro for “its actions against the economy of our region, it is sowing war, hunger, hopelessness and environmental disasters.”
They denounce arbitrary arrests, excessive use of force, illegal raids, and that the constant military and police operations to destroy small miners’ equipment, with inhuman and degrading treatment, have prevented the development of mining activity, the main source of income for thousands. of Chocó families and have increased unemployment and hunger in Chocó.
They add that the national government has failed to comply with the agreements agreed upon in the 2022 mining strike, which has generated an environment of mistrust and frustration in the mining communities.
The mining strike announced by the small miners of Chocó demands that the national government cease military and police operations, comply with the agreed agreements and formalize small and medium mechanized mining in Chocó.
