Neiva on alert for forest fires due to El Niño Phenomenon

The city of Neiva is on alert before the arrival of the El Niño Phenomenon, announced by Ideam, which has left more than 400 kilometers of land consumed by forest fires.

Faced with this situation, the municipal authority calls on citizens to correctly dispose of solid waste and avoid emergencies that put plant and animal life at risk.

The El Niño Phenomenon, accompanied by the dry season and winds, as well as the poor disposal of solid waste and the decrease in rainfall, has generated dry vegetation that is conducive to the spread of forest fires.

The Secretariat for Risk and Disaster Management has implemented a contingency plan to address these alarms in a timely manner, according to the secretary Armando Cabrera Rivera. “More than 600 hectares of land with dry plant material have been consumed by fire. Our plan prioritizes a rapid response by the Fire Department, and its success is backed by citizen vigilance, always alert to report possible fires.

Cabrera Rivera emphasized the importance of proper disposal of solid waste, such as dry plant material, glass, butts, aerosols and the like, in green areas, parks or vacant lots. Likewise, he urged the population to refrain from carrying out controlled burns, since strong winds can cause them to become uncontrolled, with vegetation and wildlife being the main victims of the fires.

Similarly, they remind citizens of the emergency lines 119 of the Fire Department and 123 of the Neiva Metropolitan Police, available to attend to emergencies both in urban and rural areas.
