The Ombudsman’s Office requested that an investigation be opened to determine whether the landslide that occurred on the Quibdó-Medellín highway, which has left 34 people dead so far, was foreseeable. This is due to the delays that the works in this sector have experienced.
“We call on the National Highway Institute (Invias) to act rigorously when carrying out the works on the roads of Chocó, in particular to take measures to avoid putting those who travel on them at risk. We have received information about the delays that have been occurring in the works on the road where the avalanche occurred, for this reason, an investigation by the competent authorities will be necessary,” said defender Carlos Camargo.
The above, the entity points out, with the purpose of determining “if the risk was foreseeable in the area where the accumulation of vehicles was generated, which unfortunately ended with the tragedy that today mourns the country, and also determining responsibilities.”
Indeed, the works on this road have not been completed for more than fourteen years and there have been several civic strikes in Chocó due to the governments’ non-compliance.
On the other hand, the Ombudsman’s Office maintained that it is present in the area of the tragedy to accompany the humanitarian efforts and verify the human rights situation of the relatives of the victims and the population that has been affected by the landslide.
“We express our feelings of deep regret and send our voice of solidarity to all the families of the victims, while we trust in the speedy recovery of the injured people. Our team from the Chocó Regional has been present in the regional institutional spaces and will continue to accompany the humanitarian work in the area of the tragedy.”
