The mayors of Sassari and Sorso discuss the consolidation works and there is talk of putting an end to the anachronistic division on the ownership of the work

SASSARI. Behind the scenes of a harmless conference of services for the completion of the safety works of the Rotonda di Platamona, a small revolution is brewing that could put an end to the complicated four-handed management of the building. This is what emerges from the talks between the mayors of Sassari and Sorso which matured around the second tranche of works necessary after the collapse of the massive wall in July 2015.

New era. The mayors of Sassari and Sorso, Nanni Campus and Fabrizio Demelas, confronted each other in an attempt to put an end to the anachronistic division of ownership of the work overlooking the Gulf of Asinara. An issue that has remained buried in the sands of time but which has returned to the fore in the aftermath of the accident seven years ago. The cadastral maps today say that about three quarters of the surface is in the hands of Sassari, and the remaining quarter in the hands of Sorso. A situation that makes management, as well as the assumption of responsibility, of the work as a whole cumbersome.

The clarification. In recent months, the Sassari administration has sent the documents to the counterparts in Sorso to express the opinion to be brought to the services conference, asking the Municipality of Romangia for authorization to intervene also on their portion of Rotonda. The Sorsense executive had given the green light without batting an eye. But in the text of the opinion he added a clarification: testing, periodic inspections, ordinary and extraordinary maintenance, even for the residual portion falling within the territory of Sorso, would remain the exclusive responsibility of Sassari. “This is because – explains the mayor Demelas – being a single building, in our opinion it was more appropriate that the management, and not the territorial competence, was carried out by a single entity. Otherwise, from tomorrow onwards the usual problem will always arise, it will be like this every time it is necessary to intervene on the work ».

“Let’s move the boundaries”. Sassari did not like the proposal, in the sense that it encountered unspecified technical obstacles. «They wrote to us – continues Demelas – that according to them it was not possible to take charge of the portion of Sorso. We take note of this and have confirmed the authorization to avoid delays in carrying out the works ». Sassari’s proposal was therefore to move the territorial limits to incorporate the piece of land and Rotonda today in the hands of the Municipality of Romangia. “We replied that this could not be reasoned d’emblée – resumes the mayor of Sorso – but that eventually we should talk about broader programming on the coastal strip. We therefore remain available to reason together ».

The intervention. The exchange between mayors took place pending the procedures of the executive project of 214 thousand euros – launched by the municipal council of Sassari – which will be examined by the conference of services and is essentially the completion of the first intervention to make the wall safe. The new intervention provides for a functional aesthetic transformation of the consolidation works. In particular, the steel gabions filled with stones will be used as the structural base of a wooden seating system with a stainless steel substructure. The same coating will be made on the access stairs, which on the east side will integrate a new ramp for access for the disabled. And finally, still in the access stairs, foot-washing trays will be built, so as to drastically reduce the removal of sand from the beach.
