Paraguay announces application to host the 2027 Pan American Games

The President of the Republic, Santiago Peña, signed this Thursday the letter of intent that nominates Asunción as the venue for the 2027 Pan American Games, seeking to definitively turn Paraguay into the epicenter of sports at the continental level.

The minister of the National Sports Secretariat, César Ramírez, and the president of the Paraguayan Olympic Committee, Camilo Pérez, reported that President Peña signed the letter of intent requested by Panam Sport to the countries seeking to host the Pan American Games.

“This is the beginning of a process that will possibly last a few months, but we are confident that Asunción can once again be a super venue for the next Pan American Games,” said the president of the Paraguayan Olympic Committee.

“The decision made by the president is due to his State policy of supporting sports and using sports to transform Paraguayan society by seeking to improve the values of the entire society,” he added.

He also highlighted that this application “is part of the process” that began with the Odesur Asu2022 Games, and that continued with obtaining the venue for the Junior Pan American Games 2025. “The Asunción 2027 step would be the total transformation of Paraguayan sport,” Perez stated.

The venue for the 2027 Pan American Games was again discussed after the organizer Panam Sport withdrew the venue initially obtained by Colombia, for its city Barranquilla.

Until January 31, all countries on the continent that want to host this sporting event have time to send their letter of intent.

The Minister of Sports, César Ramírez, highlighted that Paraguay’s application is on the right track because it has “the full support of the National Government” and because the investments that must be made coincide with the plans and projects of the current administration.

«The conversation with the president, which began yesterday, was to analyze the budgetary issue, because the Junior Pan American Games of 2025 are already going to be part of the path to reach the Pan American Games of 2027, so that it is not the expense only in the last two years,” explained the president of the Paraguayan Olympic Committee.

He highlighted that as a result of the Asu2022 Games, the city already has “90% of the sports infrastructure built” and that the largest investment pending would be the Pan American Village, which should have the capacity to accommodate about 10,000 people.

«We are very satisfied and very calm, because we believe that we are an ideal partner for Panam Sport to make the games, because we are in a very nice process. “Paraguay, if it hosts the next Pan American Games in 2027, would become an example of the development of sport not only in the region but in the world,” said Pérez.
