The tourist Thai archipelago Koh Phi Phi, known from the film ‘The Beach’ with Leonardo DiCaprio, and other paradise islands are suffering from serious water shortages. This follows an exceptional period of heat and drought.
The Phi Phi Islands off the coast of Phuket attract hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. They come for the heavenly white sandy beaches and the turquoise water.
But in recent weeks the islands have been hit by the exceptional wave of dry heat. Water supplies fell drastically.
A local catering association has already warned that the company that supplies water to the islands could stop supplies. There would be no problem for tourists. “We can handle the situation,” it said. Yet testimonies about shortages are already appearing here and there, including on the tourist review website Tripadvisor.
If the rain takes a long time to arrive, authorities are considering transferring water from the mainland.
