After discussions with government leader Donald Tusk, representatives of Polish farmers’ organizations have announced further protests against European agricultural policy and the import of products from Ukraine. On March 20, they want to block cities and larger roads across the country, Tomasz Obszankski, head of farmers’ union Solicarnosc, told news agency PAP on Saturday.

Obszanski says he is disappointed with the outcome of the meeting with Tusk. “Nothing has been announced, the Prime Minister has not announced anything of substance.” Tusk made no comment after the talks.

For weeks, farmers in Poland have been protesting against the EU’s ‘Green Deal’, which aims to make Europe climate neutral by 2050, and the import of grain and other agricultural products from Ukraine. They want to prevent cheaper Ukrainian grain from entering the local market. After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine two years ago, the EU suspended all import taxes and quotas on agricultural products from Ukraine to support the country economically.

The farmers are also against the obligations of the European Green Deal. Before the meeting, Tusk announced that his government will urge the EU to suspend or change some obligations for Polish farmers.
