Real Madrid won the Spanish Super Cup for the 13th time in its history, following its sweeping 4-1 victory over its traditional rival Barcelona, today, Sunday, in the final match of the competition hosted by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Brazilian star Vinicius Junior played the starring role in the match, which was held at the “All Park” stadium in Riyadh, after he scored the first three goals for Real Madrid, in the 7th and 10th minutes, and in the 39th minute from a penalty kick, while his compatriot Rodrigo added the fourth goal in the 64th minute.
On the other hand, Polish striker Robert Lewandowski scored Barcelona’s only goal in the 33rd minute, before the Catalan team played with ten players after Ronaldo Araujo was sent off in the 71st minute for receiving a second warning.
Real Madrid, which is participating in the competition after winning the King’s Cup last season, advanced to the final match of the Super Cup following its 5-3 victory over Atletico Madrid, after extending to extra time, in the semi-finals last Wednesday.
On the other hand, Barcelona, which won the Spanish League title last season, qualified for the final match after a 2-0 victory over Osasuna, in the other “square” match, last Thursday.
This became Real Madrid’s second victory over Barcelona in various competitions this season, after previously defeating them 2-1 in the two teams’ match in the Spanish League at the Luis Companis Olympic Stadium, the Catalan team’s stronghold this season, last October.
Real Madrid also reduced the gap separating it from Barcelona, which holds the record for the number of wins in the Spanish Super Cup, to only one title.
