From the mountains of the municipality of Íquira, Huila, an Andean Bear was recently sighted, with the help of camera traps in the renowned Tarpeya nature reserve.

The sighting corresponds to a juvenile male of Spectacled Bear, a threatened species that finds in this reserve a habitat conducive to its development and mobility. This fact not only highlights the richness of the local fauna but also provides valuable data for the evaluation of the population density of these bears in the region.

Community monitoring in the area has managed to identify a total of 9 bear individuals who use the Tarpeya nature reserve as a vital ecosystem for their survival. This type of records contributes significantly to the understanding and protection of an iconic species for the biodiversity of the region.

The success of this discovery is attributed to the joint work between the Alto Magdalena Regional Autonomous Corporation (CAM), the Nevado del Huila National Natural Park and the Red Visión Verde Collective. The collaboration between these entities demonstrates the shared commitment to preserving and promoting biodiversity in the department of Huila.

Puma concolor

In previous days, Serankwa monitoring managed to record a Puma concolor (Mountain Lion) in a high Andean ecosystem in the municipality of San Agustín.

The territory of Puma concolor varies between 56 and 375 km2, according to the availability of prey. The male’s territory is larger and generally overlaps with the home range of several females. He delimits his territory by walking trails in which he leaves footprints, scratches on the ground and leaf litter, with urine and sometimes excrement that inform about the hierarchy, sex and reproductive status of the individuals.
