Solar Storm to Bring Northern Lights to 17 US States

Residents of 17 US states will have a rare opportunity to witness the stunning aurora borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, as a solar storm is set to occur this Thursday. Usually associated with regions like Alaska, Canada, and Scandinavia, this natural phenomenon will become visible further south due to the expected peak of an 11-year solar cycle in 2024.

This will mark the fourth time in the current solar cycle, which began in 2019, that the Northern Lights have been observed in the United States. Just three months ago, residents of Arizona were treated to this captivating spectacle.

The Geophysical Institute of the University of Alaska at Fairbanks has forecasted that the aurora borealis will be visible on Thursday in the following states: Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, New Hampshire, Vermont, Indiana, Maine, and Maryland.

The Northern Lights occur when magnetic solar winds from the sun collide with the Earth’s atmosphere, resulting in the illumination of atoms in the upper part of our atmosphere. The impact of these solar winds causes a display of vibrant and colorful lights, ranging from green to pink and even purple.

Aurora enthusiasts and amateur photographers are encouraged to take advantage of this rare opportunity. Experts suggest finding a location away from city lights for the best viewing experience, preferably on a clear night.

Though the solar storm is expected to last only for a short period, experts believe there will be multiple opportunities to witness the Northern Lights in the coming months as the solar cycle continues to peak. So, for those living in the designated states, make sure to keep an eye on the sky this Thursday and prepare to be awestruck by nature’s dazzling light show.
