Ludwigshafen. The Rhine-Palatinate district will introduce a payment card for refugees in the coming weeks. According to its own information, this makes it the first district in Rhineland-Palatinate. Training on how to issue and use the card should begin on Thursday, explained District Administrator Clemens Körner (CDU) on Wednesday. SWR first reported. “We are convinced of the payment card,” said Körner. It is also about the safety of employees, who no longer have to handle cash.

The idea of such a payment card came up last year and was considered good, said Körner. Offers from various providers had also been obtained before the state decided to introduce it. He also found out about handling options from other municipalities, including the Hanseatic City of Hamburg. Others could learn from the mistakes the district might make, said Körner.
Those affected would receive the card and the associated PIN separately by post. Cash payouts are limited, and in addition to transfers to home countries, it is also not possible to place orders on the Internet and send them to addresses outside of Germany, explained Körner.

14 of 16 federal states – including Rhineland-Palatinate – agreed on common standards for a procurement process for the payment card. The federal government wants to introduce a federal regulation requested by the states. The card is intended to partially replace cash withdrawals and thus prevent refugees from transferring money to their home countries.
The Rhineland-Palatinate Integration Minister Katharina Binz (Greens) said in the state parliament in Mainz that the payment card should be introduced in all state reception centers in 2024. Whether individual cities or districts also use this map is their responsibility. lrs
