Spiritual author Don Miguel Ruiz of the Virgin urges us not to take anything personally. He says that if someone disrespects us, it is almost certainly because they suffer from psychological injuries that make them act vulgar and insensitive. His attacks have little to do with the truth about us. I agree with him, and I will add an important caveat. Even if you avoid viewing these abuses as attacks on you, it doesn’t mean you have to tolerate them. It doesn’t mean you have to keep that person in your life or allow them to bully you in the future. I suspect these are important issues to ponder right now.
