The projectile caused a fire, which has now been extinguished. The ship and its crew are unharmed and are on their way to the next port of call, the statement said. The attack, which took place 23 nautical miles west of the town of Mokha, was not immediately claimed.
Maritime company Ambrey confirmed the attack, which it said targeted a Panamanian-flagged tanker heading to the port of New Mangalore, India. The ship was still registered under a British company in 2019.
The Iran-backed Houthis have been carrying out attacks on ships in the Red Sea that they say have ties to Israel since November. In this way they want to express their solidarity with the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. The attacks have seriously disrupted international trade by sea.
